About
British flautist Lloyd Hampton enjoys a diverse career in solo, chamber, and orchestral performance - most recently winning 2nd Prize at the Liverpool International Flute Competition. Other competition successes include being Highly Commended at the British Flute Society Competitions and CUMS Concerto Competition. Lloyd has also been a semi-finalist in the Royal Over-Seas League Annual Music Competition and a finalist in the RPS/Duet Group Prize for Young Instrumentalists. He has worked with the Britten Sinfonia and Knussen Chamber Orchestra and played side-by-side with the Philharmonia and the Hallé Orchestra. Other recent engagements include playing for the St Albans International Organ Competition as a collaborative flautist.
Lloyd graduated from the Royal Academy of Music with an MA with Distinction and DipRAM (for an outstanding final recital), where he studied with Karen Jones, Laura Jellicoe, Anna Noakes, and Keith Bragg - his studies were generously supported by the Charlotte Fraser Foundation. He completed his undergraduate studies at Girton College, Cambridge, studying privately with Emma Halnan, where he held a University Instrumental Award for Chamber Music, Daphne Bird Instrumental Award and won the London Girton Association Music Award. His time in Cambridge led him to perform for H.I.H. Princess Takamado and he was invited to perform as a guest soloist with the Choir of St. John’s College, Cambridge. Further to his studies, Lloyd has performed in masterclasses with Sir James Galway, Emmanuel Pahud, Emily Beynon, Silvia Careddu, and Michael Cox.
At the Academy, Lloyd played principal flute of Symphony Orchestra, Opera Orchestra, Wind Ensemble, Manson Ensemble, and the Soloists Ensemble, with whom he recorded an album of Bach with Trevor Pinnock. Alongside this, Lloyd is active in collaborating on new music: he has worked side-by-side with CHROMA Ensemble and with composers Judith Weir and Dusan Bogdanovic. Lloyd is also a member of the Albeo Trio (flute, viola, harp) - founded while he was at the Academy - whose aim is to present lesser-known works to wider audiences. The trio have recently performed at Regent Hall, Benslow Music and for the Elgar Society.
Lloyd is also an alumnus of the National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain (playing flute, piccolo and alto flute), and a former principal flute of the National Youth Wind Ensemble, Hallé Youth Orchestra and Cambridge University Orchestra - taking him to major venues across the UK and Europe, including the Royal Albert Hall, Southbank Centre, Bridgewater Hall, Birmingham Symphony Hall, and the Barbican. He is also active as a soloist, recitalist, and chamber musician - with concerto performances and recitals in West Road Concert Hall, across Cambridge colleges, London and Manchester.
Lloyd is a Talent Unlimited artist.
